Course Description:
This rigorous, standards-based, college-prep
class offers extensive opportunities for writing, reading, listening, and
speaking. Writing includes essays in the four domains with emphasis
in analytical and expository. The curricular prepares students for
state tests, including STAR and CAHSEE. Students cover all chapters
of the Holt anthology and read one non-textbook novel. The reading
spans six genres: short stories, poetry, novels, informational materials,
non-fiction, and drama. Also included are required sections of the
grammar text, Holt Handbook. This course prepares students
for admission to advanced English classes at upper grades.
Homework:
Students copy the homework for the week every
Monday upon entering the class. Absent students and curious parents
can find homework by clicking on the homework link.
Essential Assignments:
All English 9 students must pass each of the
district's Essential Assignments in English with a "C" or
better in order to receive a passing grade in the course. Students
will be well prepared to complete the assignments in a timely manner.
Students needing additional assistance or remediation following the due
date are encouraged to speak with me personally or work with the
qualified tutors in the school's Learning Center
at lunch or after school.
