Pioneer High School is  four-year public high school, with approximately 1600-1800 students.   Boundary lines have been re-drawn in the Woodland Joint Unified School District and surrounding rural areas to accommodate Woodland’s second comprehensive high school.

 Accreditation

Pioneer High School went through its initial accreditation by the Western Association of Schools & Colleges (WASC) in our first year of operation (2003-2004) with 9th and 10th graders even though normal procedure is to wait until the first graduation class. Pioneer High School was granted interim accreditation until June 30 2007.   It will also be a member of the College Board.

 Community Profile

Pioneer High School was built in 2002-2003 and was in the final stages of completion before opening initially to 9th and 10th graders on September 2, 2003.   PHS is the second comprehensive high school in the Woodland Joint Unified School District.  Located in the City of Woodland, it serves a community of predominantly middle-income families.  The Woodland Community has a strong agricultural background.  Major employers in the community include healthcare, warehouses, and agriculture. Both Pioneer High School and Woodland High School draw students from two public middle schools and private schools that are located in Woodland.  In 2001-2002, 8% of the students’ families received aid from Cal Works, 10.5% of the students received free or reduced lunches, and 338 students were identified as Limited English Proficient.  This year the ethnic distribution of the student body is as follows: 4.6% Asian, 1.5% Black, .5% Filipino, 46.8% Hispanic, 1% Native American, and 45.5% White.

Graduation Requirements

High School graduation requirements in the Woodland Joint Unified School District include eight semesters of English, two semesters of foreign language or two semesters of fine art, six semesters of math, including one full year of Algebra, four semesters of science, six semesters of social science, one semester of state requirements (health), and four semesters of physical education, plus electives, for a total of 230 units.  Presently seniors must have 30 hours of community service.  Beginning in 2003-2004 all students will be required to have 40 hours of community service and must pass the California High School Exit Exam to receive a diploma, unless the State Legislature changes that Exam date.

Grade Point Average/Class Rank

Upon request, the school will report a cumulative grade point average and/or class ranking based on all work accomplished at Pioneer High School from grade nine onward, including physical education.  The GPA is based on a weighted scale with Honors and Advanced Placement courses counting as an additional grade point.
