Member Obligations and Bylaws
of the Pioneer High School Chapter of the National Honor Society
About the NHS
The National Honor Society (NHS)
is the nation's premier organization
established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll,
the NHS serves
to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the
areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. These characteristics have been
associated with membership in the organization since their
beginnings in 1921 and 1929.
I. Selection Process
A. Students with G.P.A. 3.5 or better (for new members as of the
2007-08 school year) will be given the opportunity to apply for NHS
during the first two weeks of the Spring semester.
B. Interested students will be asked to fill
out a Pioneer Honor Society application wiby the assigned date.
Students not turning in the forms, or turning in incomplete
paperwork by the assigned date will be removed from the candidate
list.
C. The eligible students will be rated in the
areas of leadership, character, and service by the PHS Faculty.
II. Officer Selection
Selection of the chapter's officers will
take place at the first meeting in the spring. After hearing a
description of the responsibilities of each officer the members will
nominate their peers for office beginning with president. Three
nominations will be accepted and then a secret ballot will take
place with the president being the person with the most votes. Other
officers will be elected in the same manner in the following order:
Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer.
The duties and responsibilities of each
officer is as follows:
A.. President:
a.. In cooperation with the adviser established the agenda
prior to each meeting at an officers meeting
b.. Opens each meeting with the NHS Pledge.
c.. Runs the meeting in an orderly fashion according to the
pre established agenda
d.. Is responsible for all members participating in service
projects for the school and community
e.. Follows up on all appointments to insure tasks are being
accomplished
f.. Serves as the official representative of the group to
other organizations and other school administration.
g.. Serves as Master of Ceremonies for the induction ceremony
B. Vice President:
a.. Aids in the development of the agenda at the officers
meeting
b.. Takes over the President when needed
c.. Coordinated the work of all committees
d.. Responsible for the compilation of the chapter records.
e.. Assumes other responsibilities as assigned by the adviser
or President
C. Secretary:
a.. In cooperation with the treasurer addresses the meeting
notices to members at the officers meeting
b.. Keeps the minutes of the meeting
c.. Reports, files and answers all correspondence.
d.. Keeps an accurate report of attendance at each meeting
D. Treasurer:
a. In cooperation with the secretary addresses the meeting
notices to members at the officers meeting
b. Keeps an accurate record of all members service hours in
the areas of PHS Community hours,
c. Keeps an accurate record of any funds collected or spent
for fundraising and activities
Upon election, the officers- elect will become
part of the Honor Society Council, may have a voice in the council,
but not an official vote. The term of office for each position will
begin the following fall. If an officer becomes ineligible, the
officer immediately subordinate to that position will assume that
position and a special election will be held for the office of
treasurer.
E. Leadership Council Representatives
In addition to the standing leadership positions, three (3)
representatives will be elected from the membership to have a voice
in the PHS Leadership Council. Representatives shall be members of
the NHS in good standing.
III. With membership in the National Honor
Society comes responsibility. Members in NHS will be expected to do
the following:

Attend all monthly meetings
and the annual induction ceremony. If an unavoidable conflict
occurs the member will discuss his/her absence with the adviser
promptly.

Pay their application fee or
annual dues unless there is a financial hardship.

Help organize, set up and
clean up for at least one fundraiser throughout the year
-
Participate in school and
community service projects selected by the chapter.

Continue areas of
involvement that meet the criteria of leadership, character and
service.
IV. DISCIPLINARY ACTIONS for MEMBERSHIP

First absence to monthly
meetings &/ or failure to carry out responsibilities, member is
given a warning.
-
Second absence and/ or
failure to carry out responsibilities, member is put on probation.

Third absence &/ or failure
to follow-up on responsibilities, he/she will be asked to submit a
letter of resignation. If a member refuses to resign the advisor
will present in writing to the member and the Faculty Committee
rationale for dismissal. The student will be given the
opportunity to respond in writing to the Faculty Committee. Based
on the adviser's written reasons for the dismissal and the
student's response the faculty committee will vote. A vote of 3
of the 5 members in favor of dismissal will result in the official
dismissal of the student from the National Honor Society.
V.
ACADEMIC HONESTY
If a student receives a second administrative
disciplinary referral for plagiarism, the student will be dismissed
from the National Honor Society (NHS)
VI. CONSEQUENCES OF DISMISSAL
Students who are dismissed from the National
Honor Society are ineligible to reapply for membership and are
ineligible for senior awards.
