Philosophy:

Welcome to the Pioneer High School Music Department!  I am looking forward to an exciting year of making and learning about music. This year, all of our activities will be based around learning to play and appreciate music, while at the same time having fun.  I hope that learning to play a musical instrument will be a fascinating and rewarding experience for you.

For this to occur, a certain amount of outside effort will be required.  Regular practice outside of class will be required to develop the skills we learn in class.  There will be a weekly rehearsal schedule issued to student regarding rehearsals handed out on Monday’s. My expectation is that each student will spend one-half hour per day working on this music.  This is your daily homework.  It is your choice how you spread your practice time.  The music program is one where we perform to show our skills.  These performances are required of all students in the program.   There will be several outside music festivals; pep band performances and outside community performance activities.  This schedule will be presented to students the first week of school.  Pep band is a required event for all students in the instrumental music program.  Pep band will consist of all wind and percussionist performing for football games.  All pep band performances will be given the same point value as a concert grade.  There will be pep band rehearsals every Tuesday’s after school from 3:30-4:30p.m. during the pep band season.   I will always give as much notice as possible for all events. .

Parents, it is essential that your students have a good chair, music stand, metronome, tuner, place and time to practice to be successful in music.  I am always glad to discuss upgrading instruments and will even lend time outside of school to help listen and give suggestions.

This year, we will have 3 concert bands, jazz band, guitar and AP Music Theory in the band room.  I will outline my criteria for ensemble advancement.
