The Business Education Program at Woodland and Pioneer
High Schools provides opportunities for students to prepare themselves
for careers in three general areas: Accounting and Management, Computer
Information Systems, and Retail Sales. Accounting, Business Math,
and Virtual Enterprise meet alternative credits for graduation in
mathematics and economics respectively. Students planning to major
in business should focus on keyboarding, accounting, and/or business
mathematics, while students exploring careers in business technologies
should take computer applications. Technology 9, Keyboarding and
Computer Applications courses meet the graduation requirement for
technology. Students interested in computer science careers should
focus on Information Technologies Essentials and CISCO (CCNA) courses.
9th – 10th Grade Courses
Technology 9
Semester (5 credits)
This course is designed for students to use the computer as a tool
to gain proficiency in Internet research, Microsoft Word, Excel
and PowerPoint. Students will create various word documents and
posters. Students will be required to do a Career Project mid-term.
Students will be learning how to create and present a PowerPoint
presentation in a professional manner. As a teacher our goal is
to have the students walk out with enough computer information to
help them throughout high school. This course is the base of the
pyramid and the students can only grow from here. Lab fees will
be $3.00 for required materials. This course meets the Technology
requirement for high school graduation.
10th – 12th Grade Courses
Web Page Design
Semester (5 credits)
Prerequisite: Students should be able to type at 25 wpm or better,
have demonstrated knowledge of word processing by submitting a two
page report, some knowledge of page layout by submitting an example
of desktop publishing, i.e. desktop publishing article.
The primary purpose of this course is learning the theory and application
of web page design. The student will be able to demonstrate a comprehensive
knowledge of HTML, (Hyper-Text Mark-up Language, code). The student
will learn how to develop pages that are relevant and useful with
an emphasis on using the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) standards.
The web page examples used will reflex current business models available
on the web today. This course will be coordinated with Yuba College’s
Small Certificate program in Multimedia and Web Design. This course
is a 2+2 program course.
Keyboarding / Word Processing 1
Semester (5 credits) PHS WHS This course is designed to give students
keyboarding (by touch), formatting of commonly used documents and
desktop publishing skills. Students throughout the semester will
increase their knowledge of typing techniques and skills. Students
will create a portfolio of work to show their progress throughout
the semester. Keyboarding students will complete a 55-lesson course
using computerized typing tutorial software. The students are encouraged
to use proper keyboarding skills (feet on the floor, back straight,
etc.). A $3.00 fee is required for this class to cover paper and
toner. When students complete this course they will have increased
their knowledge of keyboarding skills, techniques, speed and accuracy.
This course meets the Technology requirement for high school graduation.
Word Processing / Microsoft Office
Semester (5 credits)
Prerequisite: One semester Keyboarding/Word Processing 1 or Technology
9.
This course is designed for students to apply their advanced touch-typing
skills obtained in Keyboarding to complete various business-related
documents. Students will be expected to complete documents that
meet the standards of mailability and correct grammar. Students
will learn how to write product reviews, create resumes, and write
business reports. Math and English skills will be incorporated to
complete labels, charts and graphs. Upon completion of this course
students will be one step closer to being successful in the business
world.
IT Essentials (Information Technology)
Year (10 credits)
Prerequisite: “C” or better in Technology 9 or teacher approval.
10th, 11th, or 12th grade standing.
This course introduces students to Computer Repair as a lead-in
to Information Technology and Data Communications. Students will
learn how to build a computer from parts, install the Windows Operating
System, add peripherals, and learn about local area networks and
the Internet. The course also covers the basic networking functions
and configurations of a network. This course will help prepare students
for career opportunities in computer technology and for the CompTIA
A+ Certification exam. Material fee: $15 includes a tool kit. Fee
waivers are available for students who are unable to pay their material
fee. This class meets the Technology requirement for High School
graduation. College Credit: Successful completion of this course
will allow students to receive College Credit through Articulation
with the Yuba Community College district.
11th – 12th Grade Courses
Business Math
Year (10 credits)
Prerequisite: Recommended for students who have passed the mathematics
section of the High School Exit Exam and completion of Algebra 1.
This course introduces students to basic personal and business math
concepts they will encounter in everyday life. Students will learn
to calculate paychecks, prepare budgets, and maintain checking and
savings accounts. Students will also distinguish between various
types of insurance, both required and optional. This course will
enable participating students to manage their money from start to
finish and encourage them to take an active role in their financial
development.
Accounting 1A
Year (10 credits)
Prerequisite: Recommended for 11th and 12th grade students. Grade
of “B” or better in Algebra 1. The course prepares students to enter
business as an accounts receivable and payable clerk. Accounting
is a basic study of double-entry recordkeeping, which covers the
complete cycle of accounting. Students learn to keep accounting
records through a complete accounting cycle.
Accounting 1B
Year (10 credits)
Prerequisite: Accounting 1A
The second semester is a further study of accounting including payroll,
partnerships and corporations.
Computer Applications (MOS) (ROP)
Year (10 credits)
Prerequisite: 11th and 12th grade status Tenth grade acceptance
with teacher approval. Prior computer class such as Technology 9.
This class allows students to train and be certified (tested) as
Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOS) in one or more of the Microsoft
Office desktop applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Access.
MOS certification validates individual skill sets so that users
can exercise the full range of software capabilities and demonstrate
efficiency in completing assignments and projects. Achieving MOS
certification gives students the marketable skills necessary to
set them apart in the competitive job market.
Inside Work Experience (IWE)
Semester (5 credits)
Prerequisite: Must have an 11th or 12th grade standing, 2.5 GPA,
good attendance and recommendation from school administration.
Students may work in the library, attendance office, or counseling
office. This a pass/fail class and students must attend at least
80 percent of the school days in order to pass the class.
Work Experience Education
Semester (5 credits)
Prerequisite: Students must be employed, at least 16 years of age,
have 11th or 12th grade standing, and approval of the Work Experience
coordinator. An 11th grader must be enrolled in a “O” period class
to enroll in Work Experience 5th and 6th periods.
The program is designed to provide an opportunity for students to
develop a positive attitude towards employment. Students enrolled
will be expected to maintain eligibility for a work permit and attend
a weekly one-hour class of related instruction. Students will create
a resume and a cover letter as pieces of a portfolio. This course
will enable students to recognize their strengths and weaknesses
and use them to their benefit.
Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) 1 (ROP)
Semester (5 credits)
Prerequisite: “C” or better in Technology 9 or teacher approval.
11th and 12th grade standing. Successful completion or concurrent
enrollment in Algebra 2. Note: Tenth grade acceptance with teacher
approval. This is the first of 4 semesters training for Cisco System’s
Certification for computer network administrators. This course covers
the basics of computer networks including cabling and network design.
Students will learn about computer hardware and software, local
area networks, and network communication. Students will also learn
electrical safety and number theory. Hands-on skills are emphasized.
There is a $10 material fee for this course. Fee waivers are available
for students who are unable to pay their material fee. College Credit:
Successful completion of this course will allow students to receive
College Credit through Articulation with the Yuba Community College
district.
Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) 2 (ROP)
Semester (5 credits)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of CCNA 1. Note: Tenth grade
acceptance with teacher approval.
CCNA 2 continues training toward the CCNA Certification for computer
network administrators. Students will work with actual routers,
configuring router interfaces. Students will work with actual routers,
configuring router interfaces. Students will use the Cisco IOS and
TCP/IP protocol to design simple networks. TCP/IP protocol addressing
and subnetting will be emphasized. There is a $10 material fee for
this course. Fee waivers are available for students who are unable
to pay their material fee. College Credit: Successful completion
of this course will allow students to receive College Credit through
Articulation with the Yuba Community College district.
12th Grade Courses
Accounting 2A / 2B
Year (10 credits)
Prerequisite: Recommendation of the Accounting instructor and completion
of Accounting 1A and 1B.
This is a one-year course open to students who have successfully
completed Accounting 1A and 1B. Students will be doing much of the
work in independent study with individual assistance and guidance
from the instructor. The goal of the course is to provide students
with vocational competence in accounting. Students may also be placed
in a job placement site within the community. This course may be
taken as Independent Study with the consent of the instructor.
Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) 3 (ROP)
Semester (5 credits)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of CCNA2. Note: Eleventh grade
acceptance with teacher approval.
CCNA 3 continues training toward the CCNA Certification for computer
network administrators. Students will learn the basics of network
switching as well as intermediate routing skills. This course will
enable students to use routing protocols such as OSPF, RIP and switching
protocols such as STP and VLANs. These routing and switching technologies
are in use in networks such as those at Pioneer High School. Students
will learn to troubleshoot computer networks as part of the program.
There is a $10 material fee for this course. Fee waivers are available

College Credit through Articulation with the Yuba Community College
district.
Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) 4 (ROP)
Semester (5 credits)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of CCNA3. Note: Eleventh grade
acceptance with teacher approval.
CCNA 4 is the final course preparing students toward the CCNA Certification
for computer network administrators. This course emphasizes Wide
Area Network (WAN) technologies and the tools used to interconnect
LANs into WANs. Students will discuss use of ISDN, frame relay,
and PPP, along with a continuation of competencies from the first
three semesters. At the conclusion of CCNA 4, students may choose
to sit for the CCNA examination which will provide them with innumerable
opportunities for future career paths, both within and out of the
IT field. There is a $10 material fee for this course. Fee waivers
are available for students who are unable to pay their material
fee. College Credit: Successful completion of this course will allow
students to receive College Credit through Articulation with the
Yuba Community College district.
