Loans- Free Money you have to pay back with some interest
Federal Aid-
Money from the Federal Government in the form of Grants and Loans. Federal
Guidelines regarding eligibility and application deadlines are very
strict, so follow their instructions exactly.
The general rule of thumb-
- Learn about the FAFSA in October,
- Prepare for it in November,
- Double check in December,
- Apply on January 1st of your senior year.

There is also money from the state of California
government in the form of Grants and loans. By filling out the FAFSA form
online, you automatically complete the information for the Cal Grant.
CalGrants
In
order for you to receive monies and awards from the CalGrant system, the
state of California requires that your GPA be verified by the registrar.
In order to do this, you and your parents must give permission for your
GPA information to be released. Generally this form should be completed by
the end of January.

Scholarships
Free money from private individuals, public and private groups and
organizations. Scholarships have their own application criteria and their own
individual deadlines. Students and parents are encouraged to research and
apply as early as possible. There are many ways to search for
national scholarships. Here is one website example:
COLLEGENET
We do not recommend that
you send money to any scholarship search services. The same information is available free through the
Counseling office or online. Here is the
Current Scholarship List
through student services.
It is updated when the information for
individual scholarships and awards becomes available.
For
local, community Awards (Woodland, Yolo County and Northern
California) and national awards please come to the Counseling Office and
look through the PHS Scholarship binder.
Each spring, PHS awards scholarships made
available through local individuals, organizations and companies. By
filling out the
Local
Scholarship Application Form, you can apply for
most of the local scholarships all at once, The
deadline for the local scholarship form is the end of February each year.
If you are a member of a specific club, they may
have scholarships available. Talk to your club advisor about specific
information.
For Individual Colleges, Universities, Trade and Technical Schools:
Most post-high school institutions have their own financial aid offices,
and through those offices scholarships for those specific institutions may be
available.
